«The algebra of bordisms»
I shall review the role of the classification of bordisms in the surgery classification of manifolds. I shall begin with
the celebrated s-cobordism theorem, move onto Wall realisation and L-groups, Kreck's
l-monoids and then finally extended quadratic forms. I will give applications to the classification of
manifolds, isotopy theory and high co-dimension embedding problems.
